On My Health and Roller Blading

Fri Jun 20, 2008, 4:53 PM
Haven't really done anything personal here in a while, I guess, so here's me sharing:

I went to the doctor today to review some lab work from a week ago and--SURPRISE!--I'm a diabetic. There's also a chance that more is wrong with me, but let's just stick to that for now.

My fear of constantly stabbing myself every morning to draw blood for the evil (and uncovered by insurance thus far) blood-drinking machine aside, I'm trying to put a nice face on this all. Still, even though I'm sure it's nothing MAJOR (as in, it can be reversed), I'm a little freaked out by it. Doctors, hospitals, illness--these are not things I'm good at. After my mother died back in 2001 (and my tenure as a hospital employee around the same time), I really haven't been good at dealing with this stuff. So, to summarize: I'm sure it's nothing, I'm working on doing the "right stuff" to correct it, but I'm going to go ahead and not take this so well for a bit do to my ever broken brain and fear of the "worst case".

On to the lighter side.

As part of the previous information, I have to exercise. Knowing me, though, I'm not going to do it unless I can have some fun. The short of this is I talked myself into taking up roller blading.

I had some great plans to go out today to try them out, but it's raining. So...yeah. I did, however, attempt to just stand with the new gear on and found that.....uncomfortable. Thus, I'm NOW taking tips on how the fuck one roller blades because just bending my knees isn't cutting it? Do you just suddenly get used to it? Is there some secret?

Anyway. Got myself a big D&D-esque game tonight (Savage Lands--it's my first table top experience), so I'm going to head out.

Extra socks will save your feet. You'll get used to leaning forward a bit and keeping your knees bent, but then is advice from the guy who never really learned how to turn.

It'll be a month or three before I can kayak again, what with my back hating me, but you're welcome to join me once that happens. Kayaking is easier on the knees, and it's phenomenal exercise.
Diabetes is a strange condition. My 66 year old dad all of a sudden got it a couple of years ago, just to spite him. The poor guy's already had several mild strokes and bouts with melanoma, now he's mildly diabetic too. I don't think he has to do the needle thing, but he can't eat sugar or anything like that.

I'd probably try to pass bowling off as exercise, although there's probably not enough physical activity involved in it to even be considered that. Maybe you should just go nuts playing Wii games. Good luck overcoming everything.

"Is it redundant to put meatballs in a cheesesteak?"
"Only if redundant means glorious."
Ah, man, that sucks. Stay strong, it's really not that bad of a disease, and, according to my friends, you get used to needles really fast.

Roller blading is interesting. I dunno, I kinda' just started moving, and that was that... :P

I've never been much for outdoors...but then again I guess that's how I got into this situation.

Let me warm up with the whole indoor-ish activities (assuming I roller skate at a rink) and perhaps I'll take you up on the kayacking thing one day. I make no promises.

Actually, I'm about to make my first roller skating attempt now. Found a cheap rink nearby.

I thought about bowling--I used to bowl and there's an alley literally right outside my apartment--but I wanted to try something new. And I guess it felt like a cop out.

Also, it's looking like (in the long run) it's cheaper to roller blade.

I don't blame you, amigo. I have ankle issues, so kayaking is actually easier for me. Has been easier, anyway. Plus I can turn a kayak. Can't say the same for rollerblades or skates. (heh) Good luck with the cheap rink. How'd your first attempt turn out?
Went Saturday AND Sunday. I'm still not what you'd call "comfortable" on skates, but the second time I did sort of get the hang of turning. Sure, not sharp turns...but turns none-the-less.

I didn't fall, though....so that's....something. I'm going back Wednesday.

Awesome. If you didn't fall, you're way ahead of me.
Well, came close. I did have a couple of rink dismount issues.
