How do YOU calm down?

Mon Nov 5, 2007, 1:53 PM
  • Mood: Anger
  • Listening to: Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945
  • Watching: Journyman
  • Playing: Orange Box (360)/Bomberman (360)
I'm done with the Orange Box--which is an amazing gaming experience right up there with Mario, Zelda, Bioshock, etc. All 5 parts. Especially Portal.

...just saying. GO BUY IT (PC/360/....PS3 one day)!

The problem with being "done" with a game, however, is I lose one of my "stress relievers"...and I really REALLY need to reduce some ange......err....."frustration". Thus, I'm wondering what you kids out there do to "unwind".

Me? Well, beside video games, I have a small selection of music that kinda helps. My top album for that, right now, is "In The Aeroplane, Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. It's a great album--but I can understand if the guys voice isn't for everyone. It's not smooth...but that's what I kind of like about it. I don't think this guy could do anybody's music but his. It's odd-ish....but I'd highly recommend it for any fans of indie rock. It has a great ebb and flow.

Also in music is Magnetic Fields. I could listen to Stephin Merritt read the fucking phone book (though I'm on the fence once he starts in on "The Wheels on the Bus" for a car commercial). Currently I only have "69 Love Songs Vol 2" since it had the original version of a song called "Book of Love" that was covered by ex-Soul Coughing front man Mike Doughty. Stephin also has a lot of side bands: "Gothic Archies", "The 6ths", and "Future Bible Heros"...but none are as good as Magnetic Feilds.

Sometimes Eels comes through for me too...but it depends on the song.

Anyway...yeah, I guess music helps me a lot. And video games...but I can't work and play games....so....yeah.

So what's YOUR thing?

I would suggest learning Tai Chi or Yoga, I've got some books you can borrow on Yoga. I had a friend of mine teach me some Tai Chi while in college. We will be doing that whole sword fighting thing soon, so that might be good for all of us.

Drinking at work helps. A lil' booze, a lil murder, a lil chaos- the usual.

Actually pop out a nice bottle of whiskey right in front of your boss, and kick it back. They say that's super for her kind. :giggle:

Actually how bout playing videos of your favorite comedy/cartoon programs in the background. Inane and silly talk in the background might help distract the brain from other things that tend to be aggravating and way too serious. I've found that Space Ghost C2C in the bg has been helping me a lot recently. With not watching the content you don't have to watch it or be that involved.

A nap also helps... but yeah, the effectiveness as you're working doesn't really work.

Umm i guess some non-work things-

Reading helps too. Comics especially. =)

Drawing.

Hanging out at places not home...

--oh i think i have a band to recommend to you- Icehouse. They're like a mix of a lot of 80's bands (Bowie/Talkingheads/etc.), with that shoegaze kind of pop and drifty-ness. If you can look them up try their songs- Icehouse, Sister (i'm still getting into them, they're pretty mellow 80's.)

Final note- writing your new resume works too!

 much hate~!

I'm not sure if Yoga would be my thing. Not sure what exactly Tai Chi is (I've heard of it...just couldn't define it for you).

We're doing the sword fighting?! ROCK! When? How? Who, and What?

Why does that first sentence remind me of a Rufus Wainwright song *hums*?

I've tried in the "listen to comedy albums" thing...but it draws my attention a little too much. Music is something I can listen to "in the background" but I feel like I need to pay attention more to comedy. Oddly enough, though, I don't have the same problem with the audio podcasts I listen to. Wish I had more of those.

I try to read webcomics (Penny-Arcade, PvPOnline, VGCats, Shortpacked, Ugly Hill, Three Panel Soul) once a day. But they're pretty short...and not all of them are updated every day.

Drawing I TRY...but since I pick Crystal up from work during lunch, I don't have extra time to draw, unless it's super early in the morning or at night after she goes to bed. Then I get pissed off at myself and depressed as I keep realizing I can barely draw as it is.

I'll check e-music for Icehouse next e-music day. You should try Magnetic Fields (if you haven't already--69 loves songs seems to be THE album) and I've been getting into The National lately. You might like them. Boxer's my favorite album of theirs so far, I think. It's the most recent.

*Sings*

cigarettes and chocolate milk
these are just a couple of my cravings
everything it seems i like's a little bit stronger
a little bit thicker
a little bit harmful for me

if i should buy jellybeans
have to eat them all in just one sitting
everything it seems i like's a little bit sweeter
a little bit fatter
a little bit harmful for me

and then there's those other things
which for several reasons we won't mention
everything about them is a little bit stranger
a little bit harder
a little bit deadly

still looking into sword fighting. I've heard that Sci-fi city may have them. We'll still need the gloves though, I've found some web sites, on it, so I may buy from them . Tai-chi is like really well grounded (both feet on the ground for the most part), slow motion movement exercises.

So I finally got Orange Box. I'm taking my sweet time with it though, seriously. Portal is taking me a while to figure out, but I think it's just because I want to take my sweet time with it.
I take it you got it for PC (which makes me a tiny bit sad since it would be cool to play TF2 with ya).

Portal does it's best to train you along the way. It has a big pay-off though. But I shall not ruin.

Haha, stuff to unwind. Well, one of my most favoritest things is actually to go hiking, but there's a bit of a limit in terms of when and where I can do that around here (mostly due to weather and an abundance of rednecks with shotguns). As much as I hate team sports, moving around a lot really does tend to make me feel better. Bike paths are good, too, even if you don't have a bike.

Alternative is blasting the hell out of music and cooking something alone. If there's someone with or near me while I'm doing that, it just gets frustrating. I think that's partially because my family always mocks me when I'm doing it.

And, finally, writing has always been a big one for me. Usually on paper.
